badbastion: (imaginationsnake)
I'm trying to find things to get me back to doing creative stuff again. I was thinking that I should try the horror route, because that's my favorite of all genres of all time. But the problem is, I can never get any good ideas!

So flist, do you have any horror writing/art prompts? If you do, I might use them, I might not, depending on if something sparks in my head. Be as vague or specific as you like, though I may change things.

Also - what are you most afraid of? I'm just curious. Me, I'm scared of the dark, lol, because I imagine that there are things in it. I can't look out windows at night, too scary.

Also also - does anyone know of any good sites to get writing prompts? I don't even know where to start looking, other than the obvious, which would be google. But I'd like to use something that someone has already tried and likes.

Thanks a lot for any ideas you can give me, I really appreciate it!

i'm having a tough time of it but i'll make a personal post later

For now though, some awesome people are putting together an awesome Bang!

It's a low key, DELICIOUSLY HORRIFIC fest, with small wordcount requirements (3k or more!) and it is in the genre most dear to my heart. Im sorely tempted to participate either as a writer or an artist OR BOTH, but I'll decide soon. Author signups start tomorrow and go on for about 10 days, so seriously consider entering this! I know I will be eating up the stories and art when they come around :)

So, I fell asleep and then I woke up three hours later because of nightmares, so of course I'm craving horror. However, I've already read all of my horror books and ebooks, and I've listened to ALLLLL of pseudopod (if you're a fan of horror and podcasts, go and give them a listen! The host, Alisdair, is FANTASTIC, and while the stories are *sometimes* not super, the readers almost always are.) and I don't feel like combing through the garbage at r/nosleep to find something good. I'm not really in the mood for reading, anyway, even if it's something short. (There's a fic I wanted to read that seemed right up my alley, but I closed the tab and now I forgot the name of it or who wrote it, but it was too long for my current attention span.)

Plus, Halloween's coming up. Yay Halloween!

Long story short, I feel like trying to write some horror. Do you have any prompts for me? a couple of words, an outline, SPN, original, it doesn't matter. I don't know if I'll be successful at writing horror, but I'd love to try, I just can't think of where to start /o\

Thank yoooou!

Also I am EVEN MORE HEARTBROKEN that Silent Hills was cancelled, because I just found out that my favorite artist, Junji Ito, was working on the project. Oh, Woe! TT___TT

December 20: [livejournal.com profile] stripytights: What's your favourite genre to read? (Sci-fi, literary fiction, westerns etc) Any must-read recs?

Far and above, my favorite genre is horror. More specifically, short horror. I've been reading horror since I was old enough to go to the library and pick out my own books, starting with YA vampire novels and progressing up to Dean Koontz (who I can't stand now lol) and Stephen King (who I still love). I love short horror anthologies.

But I think horror is best when it's multimedia... I love anything by Junji Ito who draws the creepiest, coolest horror comics. I also love Pseudopod, which is a weekly horror podcast, with quality stories and excellent narrators. I love horror movies too, but they have to be just right. My favorite horror movie is The Thing (1982), which is based on the novel Who Goes There? by John W. Campbell - who was so good they named the award for best horror novel of the year after him.

Horror all the way!

Day 3

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you did not create. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so. See if you can rec fanworks that are less likely to be praised: tiny fandoms, rare pairings, fanworks other than stories, lesser-known kinks or tropes. Find fanworks that have few to no comments, or creators new to a particular fandom who maybe aren't well known or appreciated. Appreciate them.

I don't know if these are well-known or need comments, but I'm going the route of themed recs. Horror is my favorite genre, gory or suspenseful or psychological, and SPN has been the best fandom I've found so far in this regard. So!

1) The Crystal Ship by [livejournal.com profile] autumn_lilacs.

Summary: Insanity has been explained as the act of repeating the same action over and over again and expecting a different result. Some might apply this definition to Sam Winchester, but they would be wrong. Sam has tried many different things in an attempt to get to the same result: he wanted to get back to Dean. The definition of insanity more accurately reflects those in charge who thought that a single guard was adequate coverage for a man who was once condemned to death by electric chair. Despite his size, people constantly underestimated what Sam Winchester was capable of.

One day, Sam decided to leave the hospital. So he did.

Wonderfully twisty-turny creepy AU that's not an AU. OR IS IT?

2) they read baudelaire in hell by [livejournal.com profile] captainswank.

Summary: For the prompt: "Is growing flowers in somebody's heart a kink? Dean/Alastair."

Perfect Dean/Alistair: Disgusting and gory and painful and poetic with a very appropriate splash of humor.

3) Magpie, to the Seaside by [livejournal.com profile] indiachick.

Summary: Him and Dean, a house trailer by the sea, peaceful mornings recuperating from being ensouled—Sam could live with this, if only it weren’t for the uninvited visitor knocking at their door at midnight, every night

Lovecraftian and lovely, jarring in all the right places. I've just recently stumbled across indiachick, and am absolutely infatuated with her prose.

(It occurs to me that I may not have actually commented on all of these, which is an oversight that I'll have to fix soon! Authors, if you got the notification of the link and are reading this, please know that I love your fic and will make sure to leave you all my thoughts ASAP.)

Day 4

Comment to someone you haven't ever interacted with before or introduce yourself to someone you've interacted with and friend/follow them.

Will do!

There's something under the ground, Dean can feel it. It had almost reached him when he pulled himself from his grave and now it's following him everywhere, just waiting for its chance to pull him back under the cold, dark earth and bury him forever.

It's so strange to have a relatively clean plate, art-wise. I think I'm gonna livestream tonight (starting pretty late), then draw one last thing I owe somebody, then kind of take a break on the art. If I want to draw something, I will, but if not, I'll go and play a game or read some horror manga or something \o/ I do believe there are some Junji Ito stories on the internet that are new to me, plus I have a few series I was reading. (If anyone shares my love for horror and guro, I would love some links. On tumblr, I watch hellyeahhorrormanga, and I find a lot of things through that blog. But I can't always find where to read them! lol)

Speaking of reading, I am SOOO BEHIND! When the bigbang season happened, I was so busy arting for my own things that I didn't really try to keep up with all the fic coming out. There was SO MUCH. I've got a lot of it bookmarked, and hopefully I can read a big chunk of that. I look forward to it; some of those summaries sounded amazing. lol Great Job, SPN Fandom! So many creative people, it's wonderful.

ALSO, years ago, I tried my hand at doing podfic as part of a self-esteem raising thing? Like, I was (and still kind of am) embarrassed of my voice and the way I speak, and I tried to conquer that by recording a few fics and (eep) sharing them with ~THE WORLD. Okay, so like 50 people total listened to my podfics. It helped though! I'm still a little insecure about it, but podficcing was fun, mistakes and mushmouth and all. I'd like to do it again (but by NO means at the same output level of my art, lol.) SOOOO I think it would be cool if a few people would link me to their own fics, and I could mangle record them :)

*Any rating works for me, but please nothing over 2000 words, and please stick to pairings/characters I already do.

*Give me a link to one or two stories please; I have trouble choosing if someone says "any of my stories would be great." Too much to process! :P

*I'll probably stop at the first five or six or something.

*There's no guarantee it'll get recorded--I've found that there are some writers whose rhythms or dialog just flummox me, and it has nothing to do with how good a fic is. I'm a novice, see, haha.

*Also, if aspects of the story are wildly outside of my interests, I'll... probably just skip it, sorry.

ETA: Thank you all! I think I've got enough experimental subjects, haha. Though if anyone wants to throw a Sam/Castiel fic my way to practice on, I'd be happy to give that one a try, too :)
