art break! horror manga! reading things! podfic?

It's so strange to have a relatively clean plate, art-wise. I think I'm gonna livestream tonight (starting pretty late), then draw one last thing I owe somebody, then kind of take a break on the art. If I want to draw something, I will, but if not, I'll go and play a game or read some horror manga or something \o/ I do believe there are some Junji Ito stories on the internet that are new to me, plus I have a few series I was reading. (If anyone shares my love for horror and guro, I would love some links. On tumblr, I watch hellyeahhorrormanga, and I find a lot of things through that blog. But I can't always find where to read them! lol)

Speaking of reading, I am SOOO BEHIND! When the bigbang season happened, I was so busy arting for my own things that I didn't really try to keep up with all the fic coming out. There was SO MUCH. I've got a lot of it bookmarked, and hopefully I can read a big chunk of that. I look forward to it; some of those summaries sounded amazing. lol Great Job, SPN Fandom! So many creative people, it's wonderful.

ALSO, years ago, I tried my hand at doing podfic as part of a self-esteem raising thing? Like, I was (and still kind of am) embarrassed of my voice and the way I speak, and I tried to conquer that by recording a few fics and (eep) sharing them with ~THE WORLD. Okay, so like 50 people total listened to my podfics. It helped though! I'm still a little insecure about it, but podficcing was fun, mistakes and mushmouth and all. I'd like to do it again (but by NO means at the same output level of my art, lol.) SOOOO I think it would be cool if a few people would link me to their own fics, and I could mangle record them :)

*Any rating works for me, but please nothing over 2000 words, and please stick to pairings/characters I already do.

*Give me a link to one or two stories please; I have trouble choosing if someone says "any of my stories would be great." Too much to process! :P

*I'll probably stop at the first five or six or something.

*There's no guarantee it'll get recorded--I've found that there are some writers whose rhythms or dialog just flummox me, and it has nothing to do with how good a fic is. I'm a novice, see, haha.

*Also, if aspects of the story are wildly outside of my interests, I'll... probably just skip it, sorry.

ETA: Thank you all! I think I've got enough experimental subjects, haha. Though if anyone wants to throw a Sam/Castiel fic my way to practice on, I'd be happy to give that one a try, too :)

As much as I'd love a pod fic, I hate asking for anything.. lol I am weird like that but if only if you really want too consider it, Reunion Kiss would be a good short fic. Its also not porny but schmoopy angst.

I listened to your pod fic and thought you did a wonderful job with it. You are so not a mush mouth and I wondered where your Accent was but then again I live with my southern gal so I might not hear it like I used to. XD

Catching up on reading.. don't remind me of my bookmarked AO3 list... ARGH.. good luck catching up, some of the talent in this fandom is down right amazing and very creative. <3 (present company included)

Hope I am awake for the livestream cause damn I have old lady hours most of the time. I feel like I am up all night if I go to bed at 1030. lol

BTW finishing the bj fic today.... XD

[identity profile] badbastion.livejournal.com 2013-01-26 03:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh dude, don't worry about asking for things, lol. I'm asking for things here! There are so many fics out there, I'd have no idea where to start, then there's permission to be had, and worrying that an author hates podfic, etc etc. But thatnks for the link, and I will give it a shot :)

See, the thing is, my accent is weird. It's gotten better over the years, but when I was very young, I didn't talk much, at all. But I read a WHOLE lot. So instead of learning words through conversation (or tv, or movies) I learned a lot of them just by reading them, and I'd kind of make up my own pronunciations and inflections. Everybody used to ask me where I was from, kids made fun of me for "talkin' funny," etc. So I started mumbling, haha, so it wouldn't be so obvious. But living in the South for so long has kind of softened the weird edges of my non-accent, I just still say some things weird, and I don't realize it most of the time. Haha, STORY TIME!

My list! I read two of them this morning. I'm doing great! But then I look at my bookmarks, and then I stop looking at them, lol. I will read so much good fic this week.

Yaaaay bj fic!

omg I love horror manga but I haven't read any in ages and I mostly know the famous stuff. But they are like, the best. Following that tumblr.
I think podficcing is a great change of pace and it's such fun to me, good luck with finding fic! :D

[identity profile] badbastion.livejournal.com 2013-01-26 03:32 pm (UTC)(link)
yesss, it's so good! I love horror in any medium, but words + art is the best, haha. That tumblr has recommendations, with links to read some of them. I've found Shintaro Kago and Jun Hayumi manga (some pretty sick, sometimes abstract or absurd guro) around the internet somewhere, and I'm not sure how popular they are but I'd be happy to send you my horror manga folder. Minus the Junji Ito, because you've probably read all of that already.

Thanks! :)

I wrote this one ages ago - my one and only slash fic to date...I was thinking I ought to repost it and admit it was mine... Having it podded would be really cool, I've not had anything podded before!
http://lysistrata411.livejournal.com/998.html

I don't know why you are/were worried about your voice, it was very pleasant to listen to!

[identity profile] badbastion.livejournal.com 2013-01-26 03:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Sweet, I'll give it a go, thanks! :)

Ah, I've always had a problem with the way I talk. I explained some of it to dolavine above. It's been kind of a life-long thing. And I'm super-careful to enunciate and all that jazz when i'm recording :) Podficcing a few years ago did help me some with the neurotic side of the problem, lol.

But thank you, I'm glad you think so! :)

Congrats on cleaning off your fannish plate. Tell me, please, exactly how wonderful that feels? I don't think it's ever happened to me before, and I actually thought the concept was purely mythical. Looking forward to watching you draw tonight if you end up livestreaming.

Have fun reading bigbangs! We are ridiculously fortunate to be in a fandom that has so much talent and so much output. My 'to read' bookmarks are mountainous. Reckon I'll never catch up.

As for podficcing (which I know next to nothing about), a few people have recorded my fic, and have contacted me about switching some words around if they get tongue tied or there are too many sibilant sounds all put together, in order to make a cleaner sound, if that makes sense. Speaking of which, feel free to take a stab at any of mine. (Spoiler: I would love it) I've written a few shortish Sam/Dean recently: Winner Takes All, Watch the Bed Burn, or Closer which you inspired in the first place--kinda a full circle sort of thing.

If podficcing is something you're really thinking about getting into, can I also point you in the direction [livejournal.com profile] chemm80? She's a very prolific reader, knowledgeable and above all kind and super helpful, and I'm sure she'd be happy to answer any questions.

[identity profile] badbastion.livejournal.com 2013-01-26 04:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, but I've only been in the fandom for half a year, and I'm wary of commitments anyway! So I never signed up for a whole lot, I do have art WIPs, but I don't count them. I either finish them or I don't, haha.

Great, thanks for the links! I will grab one of those :) And I'm glad I can make some wiggle room if i get tongue tied, because I do often.

I love chemm80's podfics so much! I've listened to soooo many; she really is prolific. Thanks for suggesting her--it's good to know she's kind and helpful (not that I thought otherwise, but you know what I mean.) If I need help, I will shyly send here a message :)

[identity profile] badbastion.livejournal.com 2013-02-01 12:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I haaaad to do Closer, for the foreskin action :o~~~ I may try to redo it later when I've got a little more control over my squishy pronunciation (it's not TOO too bad, but you should have heard the first draft, lol.)

So enough talking myself down, haha. Here is podfic! Thanks for letting me practice on your fic, and I enjoyed it!

Thing is about us creative types? We gain energy from tiptoeing into other crafts. That's why I write AND draw (and sometimes sing loudly to an empty house.) Taking a break from one discipline and exploring another is a great way to exercise your creative muscle and refresh the ol' battery! I also think it's super-interesting to hear what people sound like. It's another way we can get to know each other. I've thought about podficcing every once in a while, but I'm wholly ignorant of what it takes. Maybe some day!

I am so very following that tumblr, too. I know nothing about manga, but the horror aspect is too enticing to ignore. I've wanted to do more SPN/horror stuff and [livejournal.com profile] monicawoe and I are cooking up a short graphic novel that has horror elements. Gettin' kinda burned out on the ol' h/c, anyhow.

I really look forward to what you produce, sunshine! I don't think any of us are totally happy with the way we sound. I hear my own voice and think "Am I that screechy? EEESH." What sort of fics are you eyeballing? Porn? Horror? H/C?

[identity profile] badbastion.livejournal.com 2013-01-26 04:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh man, after years of internet friendship, I've exchanged numbers with friends, and it's so strange to hear their voices! On the internet, sometimes you kind of get an idea of what someone sounds like or looks like, and it almost never matches up, haha.

Ooooh, short graphic novel with horror elements! As far as horror manga goes, you can't go wrong with Junji Ito. Uzumaki is his most famous one and you could probably find it to read in one google. Gyo is also excellent and creepy (and pretty gross! lol) and The Enigma of Amigara Fault is also one of his most popular, and it's also where a certain internet meme comes from.

For now, I'm just eyeballing what people give me :) But if I do this more after a bit of practice, any of those three would do me. Or case-fic with a side of ust leading to romance, haha, i love those.

What a coincidence! I listened to your reading of "Icy Hot" this morning! :) It was really great; I liked your voice a lot and you read the fic really well. <3 <3 <3 I'm looking forward to hearing a lot more podfics from you! (I assume your earlier attempts aren't available any more?) If you have any questions or anything that I might be able help you with, I offer up my services! <3 <3 <3

I don't have any fic suggestions of stuff I've written (since I haven't written anything), but you could try something short from an author on the BP list! faviconmistyzeo, for example, has a bunch of very short and very well-written fics. Since you said you wanted specific suggestions, here are a few: Alone Time or Timing or Morning Ride. :)

I really appreciate the offer of help, and will probably take you up on it <3<3

\o/ yay for podficcing. I'm just dipping my toe into it (blaming applegeuse for it) and I'm experiencing the terror of 'no my voice just sounds silly on tape.' I'd suggest one of my fics but when I look through them there's not really any dialogue and I know people prefer that in podfics. Best of luck with it!

[identity profile] badbastion.livejournal.com 2013-01-26 07:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha, the terror!!! The first time I tried it, I was shaking so badly I had to stop, and i didn't even look at my microphone for a week, lol.

Actually, one without dialogue might be fun :) If you have one like that that you'd like me to give a shot, by all means, link me to it!

I've always found my own voice to be kind of weird before I started podficcing (I couldn't listen to my own voice in videos and whatnot without cringing a bit and think, "Wait, I sound like that?" X3); and I also tend to talk too fast -- I still talk a bit fast, but podficcing has helped me articulate a bit more, and be more aware of...I guess, the pacing of my speech and my voice in general? It's helped with giving presentations a bit. XD So, yay, other benefits to podficcing! I'm glad you're giving it a shot! :DDD If you need a cheerleader or a beta-listener or whatever, feel free to prod me!

If you want to record something without worrying about asking an author for permission, I have a list here of SPN authors who've given blanket permission for transformative works: http://cakehole-club.livejournal.com/429.html :)))

[identity profile] badbastion.livejournal.com 2013-01-26 07:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh man, that "hearing yourself on the answering machine" thing. I do the fast talking, too, but one of the first things a friend told me when I started to try recording fics was to sloooow doooown and yeah, articulate. I feel stiff and weird doing dialog still, but it';s fun when i feel like I'm getting it right :)

So many good resources in this post. Thank you so much for your offer of help!

I have a short (1200) cracky J2 fic - The Day the World Ended (And Love Began) you coul dlook at if you like. It's not porny but amusing and a little sweet (and apocalyptic!)

Of course, you're welcome to add my other stuff to your list! Plenty of porn there ;-)

I have a long list too, I'm 2/3 of the way through last year's BB! This year, I'm playing!

[identity profile] badbastion.livejournal.com 2013-01-26 07:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, have fun with the BB!

Thank you for the fic link, but I'm not really into RPF, especially for podficcing--I don't know their voices, at all. If you have an SPN fic in mind, I'd be happy to give it a shot!

I totally get it. I have always wanted to read my own stuff and record it but I have a very pronounced Southern (United States) accent and there are a lot of negative connotations associated with having a southern accent, as in the person is uneducated, not very smart, etc, so I just never posted any.

Anyway, if you want tiny short little SPN fics, I've got a TON of them. I've done two snapshots tables which are all ficlets, many under 1000 words. You can go here: http://verucasalt123.livejournal.com/150541.html andif you scroll down through my regular SPN stuff, there are separate sections for the stories I wrote for those tables. You are more than welcome to try out any of those, or any of the stories I've written. I've given blanket permission for anyone to create art or podfic for my stories.

[identity profile] badbastion.livejournal.com 2013-01-26 07:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Eep! So many stories! I honestly couldn't pick one, because so much to choose from overwhelms me. If you have a couple that you really like, I could try to do one of those?

I love blanket permission. I give blanket permission too, and some neat things have happened because of it :)

I know what you mean on the accent! I grew up in Texas and Arkansas but somehow dodged the accent (other than a few vowel sounds) through being a weird kid, haha. But my sister actually managed to get on Wheel of Fortune, and when she got home and watched the recording, she was like Ohhh my god, I didn't know I had that much of an accent! Funny thing about talking to her on the phone is, when we hang up, I can do a southern accent for a while. Nothing wrong with them--soooo many people have them! And one of the podficcers I really like (can't remember her name right now) has a pretty obvious accent, too. But I do get not wanting people to hear you and judge you on it. It sucks that southerners get such a bad rap!
